Guidance and access

Refuge du Lac de la Grande Léchère allows to plan at least three clear issues: a medium-high of 1,680 meters, a mountain environment open to time changes and a useful reference to move along the slope of Saint-François-Longchamp, in the Montgellafrey sector. This combination is often translated into days where weather and visibility weigh as much as distance. The approach should be addressed with a margin, especially if close necks or crest routes are linked.

Land and paper in the area

The shelter is in a field of pastoral and alpine relief at the same time, under summits as Le Grand Mas and other elevations of the next cord that clearly exceed two thousand meters. It does not work so much as an isolated destination of deep valley, but rather as a support to travel this part of Savoy with a logic of link, withdrawal or phase division. The proximity of the S02 route from the col du Chaussy to Fontaine Froide and the Chin pastoral des Inversaires reinforces this reading: it is a useful point for reorganizing the day if time gets worse or if a less exposed exit to lower levels is sought.

In practical terms, water does not seem to be the main immediate problem, as there is a source pointed out very little away from the shelter and another, Fontaine des Bacarons , less than a mile. However, in the mountains it is appropriate to check flow and conditions before depending on them. By altitude and location, this shelter fits better with trails and mountaineers who are already moving with basic autonomy, able to read the ground, adapt the plan and use the place as a functional reference rather than as a short tour end.
