This point of reference is key to map navigation in the high sector of the Duero River, located very close to the historic Soria Bridge , a monument of great landscape value that marks the passage of ancient forest roads. Its geographical position fully integrates it into the environment of Sierra de la Umbria , serving as a visual and logistical milestone for those who pass through the dense albar pine forests characteristic of this area of the Iberian system.
From a strategic perspective, the shelter acts as a connection node for various hiking routes, highlighting its role in the route of GR 14 and GR 86 in its approach to the massif of Pico Urbion . It is also a natural point of passage on local routes such as Route of the Puentes del Duero or the path by Valley of the Paul . The proximity of reliefs as Andadera stone (1489 m) and Monte Peña Rubia (1433 m) allows the shelter to be used as a basis to guide the ascension of half-mountain, facilitating the reading of the land in an area where the network of tracks and trails is dense.
Due to the meteorological variability of the area, a conservative approach should be adopted and this facility should not be blindly trusted as the only overnight resource without prior verification of its status. As a free shelter, the mountaineer must maintain total autonomy in terms of equipment and supplies. For water supply, a source at a distance of approximately 1.5 km, so it is necessary to secure the water reserves before starting days towards more distant summits such as Three Sources or Mount Congosto . Its location next to the road from Salas de los Infantes to Abejar facilitates access, but requires foresight in waste management and respect for the protected environment.
