At 1,650 meters, it is left in a range of medium-high mountain where the forest leaves way to a more open terrain as you gain height towards the crests and tops of the massif. It is not a shelter linked to an immediate inhabited core, but rather a useful intermediate point for those who cross the area or need to break a day in this sector of the Eastern Pyrenees.
Its position helps to read the ground well. Up, the relief is organized around the massif of the Cannigó , with close references such as the Pic du Canigou, the Pic Joffre or the Puig del Roc Negre, all of them close enough to understand this shelter as a sober basis for moving on mountain routes and not just as a walking coat. To the bottom, the reference of Eloher and the forest track allow to place it on a relatively clear access slope on the map, although this does not eliminate the need for orientation if long paths or cross-road variants are linked.
The planning of the stage requires autonomy. The nearest invented source is about 2.4 km away, so it is not wise to take the water for granted in the shelter itself or in its vicinity. Nor should its closeness be interpreted as a guarantee of frequent passage or continuous support: on this side of the Canigó can function both as a transit point and rather isolated enclave depending on the time, weather and route chosen. In long days, especially if it is linked to the HRP or with ascends to higher levels, the most important factor here is to adjust well water, orientation and margin in the face of time changes.
