Mountain refuge Cabane Cortalets

In the Cannigo massif

Cabane Cortalets is located at the end of Taurinya, in Occitania, within the mountainous environment of the Cannigó , one of the clearest references in the eastern Pyrenees sector. Its position places it in a useful area to organize a day of liaison or ascension, especially because of the closeness of long routes such as the HRP and GR 10 , which go through this massif and turn the area into a natural point of passage for traverses. It also fits in the context of the North Cami or the Cannigó, related to the GR 83, so that it can serve as support in mountain stages where it is appropriate to share effort and level.

Planning and precautions

At 2040 meters, the shelter is already at a point where time can change quickly and where wind, fog or a thermal downfall easily alter the day. In addition to its role in the journey, the cabana is close to tops like the Pic Joffre and relatively close to Pic du Canigou , so you can enter the planning of high-middle mountain ascension on exposed and open ground. There is a source located at about 590 meters, a useful data on paper, although in this type of environment it should not be dependent on it without first checking flow and state. If it is proposed as an intermediate stop or as a basis for a stage, it is reasonable to have autonomy, to review weather forecasting and to prepare the route with margin, especially in long days or in links between signposted routes.
