Its location, in the surroundings of the Trois Seigneurs massif and within the current municipality of Val-de-Sos, places it in an area of medium and high mountain where the itineraries link hills, ponds and open lomas rather than comfortable valley bases.
At 1,680 metres, this free shelter is close to the Pic des Trois Seigneurs which exceeds 2,100 metres and clearly marks the character of the land. The Pic de Bassibié , a sign that the shelter moves in a landscape of rounded peaks, diagrams and slopes exposed to the wind. In this context, it can be used both to break a day and to propose a nearby ascension, provided that the weather and orientation are well determined.
The toponym of Étang d'Arbu, Étang d'Artax or the Col de Lastris helps to understand its role on the map: not so much an arrival point in itself as a useful piece to link along the mountain of Suc-et-Sentenac, now integrated in Val-de-Sos. For those who move through this area, the shelter can function as a support for the journey or as a short base, but the choice between one option or another depends on the actual itinerary and the continuity of the land, since here the useful distances are not read only in kilometers.
It is appropriate to plan with caution. Although there are several invented sources in the environment, the nearest one is more than 5 kilometres away, so it is not reasonable to have immediate water next to the shelter. In long days or in heat, it is wise to go out with sufficient autonomy and check out where to recharge. The same logic is true for the rest of the logistics: since it is a mountain point, it is important to confirm the state of access and not to base the route on assumptions.
More than a shelter associated with a inhabited valley or rapid access, this site responds to a transition mountain between local itineraries and recognizable voyages. It is therefore particularly useful as a reference of navigation and planning: it allows better reading of the position with respect to the cords of the massif, to assess whether it is appropriate to attack the summit, to cross into a hill or to limit the day as time changes.
