Mountain refuge La Vieille Cabane (Estrop)

Between passage and isolation

In the sector of Le Vernet, within the Alpes de Alta Provence, this cabin fits better in a mountain transit logic than in that of a shelter with immediate access from the bottom of the valley. Its position, in the surroundings of the Col de Mariaud and at 1,775 meters, places it in a strip where the itineraries begin to gain the character of medium and high mountain, with more open terrain, rapid changes of time and a direction that should be well determined if they are linked hills or pastoral paths.

The area is part of the Strop massif, dominated by the Tête de l'Etrop, the main summit of these Provençal Alps. This helps to understand the role of La Vieille Cabane (Estrop): not as much as an isolated destination in itself, but as a support to divide days, link travel paths or approach reliefs such as Pic des Têtes, Roche Close or Puy de la Sèche. It can also make sense within long-distance routes that pass through the area, such as the Tour de l'Ubaye for the GR 56, always with the idea that distances and combinations depend on the chosen access and the state of the land.

Planning and autonomy

To plan the route, the most useful data here is logistics. There is a fountain located about 1.46 km, a reasonable but not immediate distance, so it is not appropriate to have water next to the shelter without first verifying the exact itinerary and the time of the year. In an environment of open hills and hillsides, that difference may be relevant if it is late, hot or with unstable foresight.

As a mountain shelter in a transition area between valley and crest, it is especially useful for hiking experienced in long walks and for mountaineers who prefer to share effort before gaining height towards the massif. If it is proposed as a point of passage, it makes sense to review map, water and weather well. If it is proposed as a basis, it is appropriate to assume autonomy and not to take for granted unconfirmed equipment or services.
