The mental map here is clear: above are the tops and spurs as Le Morgonnet , very close, and later, more marked references are raised as the Pic de Morgon , Tête de la Vieille or Pic de Charance . This combination gives the shelter a supporting role in transitional terrain, where the forest and open slopes link with a more mineral landscape as you gain height.
It does not stand out as much for a great extreme isolation as for its useful position to order the day. From this area are crossed itineraries of different scale: the route of the Balcons de Serre-Ponçon provides local and panoramic logic, while the proximity of the GR 50 , on the Tour du Parc National des Écrins, insert it into a network of longer journeys. There are also senderist links in the region, so that it can be used both to break a stage and to raise ascension or circular tours through the loops and peaks of the sector without the need to go down to the bottom of the valley.
The near relief conditions planning. The presence of Pic de Morgon less than two kilometres in a straight line suggests clear mountain use, but it is appropriate to interpret this proximity with caution: in mountain, the distance on the map does not amount to a short or simple access. The orientation, the type of path and the state of the ground can change much the real demand, especially if they are linked to the hills or are sought to change the side.
In key to free shelter , the important word is autonomy . There is a relatively close source, the Fontaine de Serre Durian , about 1.26 km, but that does not guarantee flow or availability at any time. That is why it is necessary to go out with sufficient water or with room to manage it on the ground. It is also reasonable to foresee changing weather and not to take for granted unconfirmed equipment or services, something especially important in small shelters for unsaved use.
