At 1.418 meters, it is located in a useful point to be oriented between slopes and steps of half mountain of the surrounding Ubaye-Serre-Ponçon in a land where it is appropriate to carry a clear map of valleys, hills and local detours.
Its position helps to read the relief between the Serre-Ponçon sector and the mountains that rise to the Sommet of Dormillouse and Sommet du Col Bas . This closeness to summits that far exceed two thousand meters gives the shelter a practical role: it can serve both to fail a journey and to decide whether to continue to higher levels or to limit the day to link routes. In this context, routes such as Balcons de Serre-Ponçon or Les Lacs du Col Bas help you understand your interest as a point of passage within a variable mountain road network.
It doesn't look like a site to improvise navigation. The area combines pastoral itineraries, local routes and accesses that can change much according to weather. With fog, wind or storm, a coat of this kind gains value as timely support, but the decision to use it as a base or only as a guard depends on taking the day well measured from the start.
In logistics, water deserves prior attention. There is a source located just under 2 km away, reasonable distance on the map but enough not to have it with no margin. If you plan to go through the shelter or use it on a long route, it is wise to go out with autonomy and review the actual state of the water points.
Because of its location in the Alpes de Alta Provence, this mountain shelter works mainly as support in open and changing terrain, more useful for mountaineers who structure well the orientation and the alternatives of descent than for those who seek a linear and obvious route.
