Mountain refuge Cabane des Ludines

In this sector of the Ariège, the passage of itineraries such as the GR 10 and a variant of the HRP places the area in a clear mountain transit strip, but the Cabane des Ludines it maintains a quite remote character within the Aston Valley. At 1630 metres, it functions more as a support coat on medium and high mountain grounds than as a point linked to immediate access. Its position fits well in liaison days, diversions on long or long routes looking for hills and looms between the surroundings of Beille and the most open headers of the valley. The surrounding landscape responds to this pirenian logic of high pastures, wide and highlighted slopes that is gaining severity towards the nearby summits.

This intermediate role is better understood by looking around: in a few kilometers elevations such as the Pic de Mille Roques or Pic du Pas de Chien enough to mark a serious mountain environment without the shelter necessarily being at the center of a great concentration of steps. That is why it can serve both to divide a journey and to prepare tours on high ground where meteorology and orientation weigh more than the distance on the map. The nearest registered source is more than 3 km away, so it is appropriate not to have immediate water in the shelter environment and to plan with autonomy. It is also reasonable to foresee changing conditions specific to this level in Occitania, especially if it is linked with long routes or with steps towards border areas.
