Mountain refuge Cabaña Verónica

Central massif

Veronica cabin is located in the surroundings of Bulnes and Camaleño, within the Central Massif of the Picos of Europe, in a very high and open strip of the Urrieles sector. Its location, at 2324 meters, places it in a clearly alpine terrain, above the forest landscape and very exposed to rapid changes in time, wind and fog. In this sector it acts mainly as a reference of height along with the foothills of Pico Treasurer , with Old Peña relatively close, in an area of pedestres, rocky slopes and steps where orientation can be complicated when visibility falls.

Day and autonomy

More than as an isolated destination, this mountain shelter in Picos de Europa should be understood as a support in a severe environment, useful for mountaineers who already move on high mountain terrain and plan the day with margin. There are no data here on specific access routes or on linked routes, so it is not appropriate to take for granted simple times, stages or approaches. Nor is it prudent to have immediate water in the environment: the registered sources are several kilometres away, so that autonomy weighs on planning. In such a high and mineral area, any displacement depends much on the state of the sky, the residual snow or the ice according to the time, and the ability to progress safely on exposed ground.
