Mountain refuge Abri de Katzenthal

More step than summit base. Abri de Katzenthal it appears in the forest strip of Lembach, in the north of Alsace, within the scope of the Vosgos del Norte and very close to contact with the German Palatinate. Its height, just 216 meters, places it far from the classical high mountain shelter: here the land responds more to a network of forest tracks, herring lomas and continuous changes of direction between short valleys and low crests than to an alpine itinerary.

This position gives it meaning especially as an ongoing support for those who link signposted tours of the area. In this sector they come together as the Saar-Rhein-Wanderweg and several itineraries of Pfälzerwald , so the coat fits better on days of journey or long routes than on a concrete ascension. The nearby elevations, such as Mohnenberg, Maimont or Schweinsfels, help to understand the relief of the environment: they are not great summits, but references that require alternating orientation between slopes, soft hills and closed forest, something that can slow the progression of what their altitude suggests.

This should be considered on an autonomous basis. Although there are relatively close sources, the nearest one is just over 1.3 km and should not be considered safe without prior verification. Nor does the low altitude eliminate the middle mountain factors: with rain, mud or fog, the navigation between forest crossings can be complicated, especially on long or cross-border routes. This coat therefore works better as an intermediate resource within a well-prepared route than as a point to trust without alternative.
