Its location, in the vicinity of the Bois du Désert, places it in a useful transition area to move between small valleys, forest plateaus and long-distance links to the border.
This position gives him interest, above all, as a support shelter for walking days on signposted itineraries in the area. The presence of the Via Francigena in its French section, identified here as GR 145 it strengthens its role as a point of passage or pause within longer journeys, while other local routes allow to link balconies, karmic sources and forest sectors without the need to raise it as a basis for ascension, as there are no nearby summits associated with the shelter. More than an isolated high mountain destination, it fits into a logic of step progression and orientation between local roads.
At about 900 meters of altitude, the environment can change quickly according to the station, especially in cold, wet or fog days, which are common in this type of Jurassic relief. It is therefore necessary to plan the approach well and not to take for granted a quick advance even if the gap does not seem extreme on the map: the changes of direction on tracks, paths and forest crossings can extend the march if clear navigation is not carried. It is also reasonable to provide for basic autonomy, because the available data do not place immediate water points next to the shelter.
In fact, the registered sources appear several kilometres away, with the closest of about 4.8 km, a distance sufficient to not have easy resupply once in the surroundings of the villa. For those who value this mountain shelter in a prudent planning, the most useful thing is to understand it as a logistical support in a wide network, not as a place with resources secured within a short distance. Water, weather and orientation deserve to be reviewed before departure, especially if it is to be considered to link long stages in the Pontarlier sector.
