The altitude already places it in an open mountain environment, with rapid time changes and a more marked sense of exposure than in the middle. In long days, it can fit as a basic coat when the schedule is extended, the weather is complicated or it is appropriate to fail the course in this part of the Occitania .
The immediate environment is well linked with the type of relief that characterizes this area of the Turmalet massif and access to wider areas of the Néouvielle : high slopes, mineral terrain and steps where hiking leaves way for a more changing mountain. References such as Pic de Caoubère , Pic d'Estibère or Pic d'Aygues-Cluses , summits that help to understand the Alpine character of the place without turning the shelter into an exclusive ascension base. Its role is rather that of intermediate support to link valleys, hills and circular tours of variable entity.
It can also be practical in traverses around the Lac de l'Oule or in the great bouchle of the Néouvielle region, always considering that distances and hardness depend very much on the chosen itinerary. Their presence should not be interpreted as a guarantee of comfort or of nearby resources: the registered sources are several kilometres away, so it is wise to leave with sufficient water and a margin of autonomy.
By situation and height, it makes more sense for mountaineers who already move well in the pyrenees and know how to adjust the day to the fog, the wind or a rapid evolution of the cloud. On stable days it can be used to extend the journey to near hills and peaks; with uncertain time, its usefulness increases as a point of protection within an area where the orientation and management of the effort weigh as much as the path.
