Rifugio IL TRUC is located at the end of Mompantero, in the Valle de Susa on a hillside that works more as a mountain transit area than as a valley bottom. This position conditions its use well: it is especially useful for those who travel long routes and needs to break the day before continuing to Susa, to Usselio or by links that cross this part of the Piedmont. Around it they match tours with very different profiles, from the GTA to Via Francigena by the variant of Moncenisio, in addition to the Sentiero dei Monaci, Via Pacifica or the Sentier des 2000, so that the shelter fits better as a point of logistical support than as an isolated destination.

At 1706 meters, the environment already calls for mountain planning, especially when the route changes direction on the hillside or links with higher steps. In this area, these changes can influence the progression by exposure to the sun, soil moisture or wind according to the chosen side. It also gains interest for mountaineers looking for a simple base on routes with alpine projection, with nearby summits such as Rocciamelone marking the character of the sector. There is a very close source, about 70 meters, and several more in the immediate environment, a useful data for organizing water during the march, although it is necessary to have autonomy and always confirm the real conditions before leaving. When used within a journey, rather than by specific services, its value is to allow the stage to be adjusted at an intermediate point well connected to several trails in the area.
