At a level of 1234 meters, its location allows to accurately identify the change of the slope before taking the ascension to the upper cords of the massif. The relief in this area of El Hornillo has a marked transition, where the denser vegetation of the lower valleys begins to give way to a more exposed mountain terrain, characterized by granite and high bushes.
To the north, the horizon is dominated by the silhouettes of large massizos that exceed two thousand meters of altitude. They highlight elevations such as the Eagle Risco and the Covacha Morrito, which mark the divisive of waters and define the alpine character of this abulian sector. This strategic position makes construction a point of support for those who sail the southern side, serving as a visual link between the valley bases and the technical areas where the land becomes more demanding and without obvious paths.
In conditions of reduced visibility or changing weather, this point is key to the orientation with map and compass. The proximity of summits such as La Cabilla or the Eagle's Cancho helps triangular position before entering the upper canchals or the Covacho's head cords. It is essential to understand that, due to its moderate altitude compared to the central axis summits, the shelter marks the safety limit before entering the isolation of the high saw.
The planning of any activity in this sector requires a very careful management of resources, especially with regard to water supply. Although there is a source just over a kilometre away, the seasonal variability of the flows on this side forces the mountaineer to maintain strict autonomy. The immediate access to water supplies should not be taken for granted, so it is recommended to load the deposits at the known points before gaining height to the surrounding peaks.
Given the absence of services and the lack of up-to-date data on their equipment, the Las Tormeras Refuge should be considered exclusively as an emergency infrastructure or a technical point of passage for navigation. Its usefulness lies in the timely protection against sudden storms or as a geographical reference on the map, but it is not advisable to plan overnight stays without a complete and autonomous living equipment. Prudence in the assessment of the state of the installation before departure is essential to ensure safety in this mountain environment.
