Mountain refuge Refugi Costabona

In the divisive of Costabone the ground is already fully open. At 2,180 meters, at the end of Setcases and on the way from Setcases to Espinavell, this free shelter is left in a mountain strip where the wind, fog and rapid time changes are much more conditioned than the distance. The proximity of the top of the Costabona, less than a kilometre away, and the nearby presence of elevations such as Rock Colom or Puig de la Llosa place the coat in an environment of high, necklaces and long dorsal, more exposed than attached to forest or valley background. In this part of the Eastern Pyrenees, between the Ripollès and the steps towards Espinavell, its function fits well as basic support for a long day or to fail crest and cross tours.

It also makes sense within long-distance routes that pass through the area, especially the HRP , in addition to the GR 10 on its pirenaic journey and other paths with wider context such as the Camí Oliba , the Ter Route or the Camins de l'exili. More than a shelter designed for a comfortable stay, it is appropriate to understand it as a point of protection in a mountain where autonomy weighs much in planning. There are no sources near the coat and the nearest water references are already several kilometres away, so it is important to get out with the water determined and not trust to find immediate supply. The same prudence should be applied to the rest of the day: to review weather forecast, to assess the orientation if nubosity enters and to have sufficient margin, because the altitude and exposure of the Costabona can harden an apparently simple itinerary.
