Its height, around 318 meters, places it in a forest valley environment near Oberhaslach, in the Lower Rhine alsatiano, where the main function is to cut a day, reorganize material or prepare a rise to more marked reliefs in the sector.
From this low position, the ground changes rapidly by gaining height towards nearby summits such as Schneeberg, Barenberg, Eichkopf or Urstein, all above 900 meters. This makes it useful for hiking people who advance from the bottom of the valley and for mountaineers who prefer to separate the forest approach part from the most demanding section. It does not appear as a shelter of crest or of the Alpine circus, but as a support in the transition between forest roads and the average levels of the Alsatian Vosgos.
It can also make sense as a point of passage within signposted long-range routes across the area, such as the GR 531, GR 532 or the Sentier Stanisla- Kléber, in addition to the Saverne-Donon axis and the Chemin des Châteaux Lincold'Alsace. In this context, your interest depends on how the day arises: short base to explore nearby slopes and peaks, or functional stop to follow route the next day without too long the valley stage.
In the logistics part, an autonomous approach should be maintained. There are sources in the environment, but the nearest one is about 2.5 km away, so it is not wise to have immediate water next to the shelter. In a wet and wooded area like this, meteorology can change the running sensations more by mud, cold or continuous humidity than by alpine exposure, so that access and overnight are better understood with simple planning and space to adapt to the ground.
