At the head of Sixt-Fer-à@-@ Cheval within the framework of the natural reserve of Sixt- Passy , the ground combines herbous slopes, limestone highlights and a clearly alpine environment. In this part of the Gifre massif, the mountain gains height quickly and exposure to the wind, fog or sudden changes of time is part of the normal context of the day. In this scenario the Refuge du Grenairon at 1974 metres, as mountain support in an area where it is appropriate to plan with margin and without relying on excessively detailed information on routes.

Its utility fits mainly with medium and high mountain exits on open ground, rather than with an improvised visit. There are no data here on close specific routes, so the wise thing is to understand it as a basic support shelter and prepare the approach with mapping, weather forecasting and sufficient autonomy. The presence of a source at about 28 meters is a relevant data for the logistics, although in mountain it is always appropriate to confirm flow and conditions before having it as the only point of water.

The immediate environment reinforces this mountain character. Very close they rise summits like Pointe de Sales , Mont Buet or Pointe de Chardonnière in addition to other elevations which clearly exceed 2700 metres. This proximity does not imply simple access or obvious ascension from the shelter door, but it does place the building in a useful strip for those who move on high ground and need an intermediate point at a serious relief, with relevant levels and orientation that can be complicated if the time is closed.

By profile, it is more consistent for long-time mountaineers, land reading and autonomous material management. As there is no information here on services, interior status or equipment, it is reasonable to propose the exit with self-sufficiency and with the idea that the altitude, exposure and relative isolation weigh more than the administrative proximity to the nuclei of Alta Savoy.
