The registered sources are well below, several kilometres away and with a strong difference of height, so it is not appropriate to have near water in the immediate environment of the vivac. This altitude also places the shelter on a fully glacial and high mountain ground, where the wind, cold and time changes make the day much more difficult than in a valley shelter.
Its location in the Spala Isler, within the massif of Grand Combin and on the sector of Bourg-Saint-Pierre, places it in an alpine passage strip between the Valais and the great reliefs that separate Bagnes and Entremont. It does not work as much as support for conventional hiking as for cordades and mountaineers moving on high routes. The context explains it well: very close the Grand Combin de Grafeneire above 4,300 meters, and the normal way to the Combin de Valsorey passes through the same back.
In stage planning, this bivouac fits better as an intermediate or guard point on an alpine crossing than as an isolated destination. At lower levels there are references of routes such as Tour du Val de Bagnes , some stretches to Panossière or the surroundings of the Tour du Lac des Toulles, but the shelter is well above these trails. It should be read as a link piece between high mountain itineraries, not as a direct extension of a signposted excursion.
It also influences the user profile. By altitude, relief and proximity to glacial summits such as the Grand Combin, Mont Vélan or the Combin de Corbassière, it is more useful for mountaineers with experience in orientation and progression in alpine environment than for those who seek a simple-pass shelter. If the day depends on water, fast withdrawal or comfortable conditions, it is better not to plan with only this point.
Before leaving, the practical reference is clear: map, stable weather, time margin and self-sufficiency. In such an area, the shelter mainly performs a tactical function within a demanding ascension or journey.
