At 2,560 meters, at Piedmont and next to the surroundings of Lake Autaret, it works above all as a clear reference for those who move along high mountain terrain and need to order the day according to the relief, the meteor the time margin. At this point, the change of time can condition much more than on average, and that gives the shelter value not only as a destination, but also as a point of withdrawal or reorganisation of the itinerary.
Its position fits a sector of passage between crossing routes and border routes. Near converge traced as the Via Alpina , Sentiero Roberto Cavallero , the route of La Frontière Fortifiée and turns of several days like the Tour de l'Oronaye or Tour du Bric de Rubren . This suggests a very practical use: to divide long stages, to adjust a withdrawal if time gets worse or to reserve forces before a hill, a journey or a more ambitious day.
The environment is simply alpine. The altitude, the proximity of peaks that already clearly exceed three thousand meters - as Tête de la Frema or the Bric de Rubren , linked to Cima Mongioia - place this shelter in an area where the orientation and reading of the land weigh as much as the distance. It is not necessary to think of large figures to understand its character: it is an exposed location, with an atmosphere of hills, high slopes and routes where poor visibility can complicate navigation.
It is therefore particularly useful when the decision is not only to move forward, but to decide when it is appropriate to stop, cut or change the plan. On long trekking days along this part of the Piedmont, it can serve as intermediate support rather than as a simple end of excursion.
It is also appropriate not to have immediate water in the very environment of the shelter: the registered sources are several kilometres away, the closest to about 3.7 km. As a result, it makes sense to arrive with sufficient water autonomy and with the revised route in advance, especially if it is planned to cross the area with unstable weather or at the end of the day.
