Deuxième bergerie de l'âne is located in the Vaujany , inside the Belledonne , in a mountain strip where clearly alpine passage and terrain coincide. Its position approaches the axis of the Haute Traversée de Belledonne for GR 738 , so that it fits better as a support on a journey or as a guard within a long day than as a shelter linked to a short and comfortable access.

The immediate environment responds to an open, high and exposed mountain, with close cords and needles that mark the character of the place. A little more than 2100 meters away, the shelter is at a point where time can change quickly and where wind, fog or a sudden drop in temperature make progress very difficult. On the map of the area helps to understand the transition between the reliefs of Vaujany and the high steps that articulate the stages of the most mountainous Belledonne.

Their practical interest is mainly in that liaison function. Nearby are variants and stages of the massif crossing, as well as the trails of the Oisans, so it can be used to fail long routes or as a reference point on itineraries that do not end in the same valley. There are no immediate sources next to the shelter and the nearest ones are more than 3 km away, so it is necessary to have sufficient water from the beginning or to plan the resupply very well. This distance, coupled with the altitude and the cross-sectional character, makes it advisable to move with autonomy and without trusting to find resources in short range.

In an area so exposed and oriented to continuity routes, this coat makes sense especially for those who already arrive with the thought-out day: access, meteorology, water and alternative descent. More than a destination in itself, it works as a useful piece within a terrain where the previous organization weighs as much as the physical effort.
