Mountain refuge Cabane Portella de Dalt

Cabane Portella de Dalt works mainly as a step-by-step shelter. In the surroundings of the Cannigó massif, it helps to fit a day when time changes, the time is extended or the progression between low and more mineral levels asks to divide efforts. Its position in the Vernet-les-Bains area, within the Conflent, relates it to long-distance routes such as the HRP and the GR 10, in addition to the North or Canygó Cami, so that it is not understood only as an isolated coat, but as a useful piece within wider movements on the eastern pirenaica side.

At 1215 meters, the shelter is in a very marked transition strip. Below are more forest environments and Mediterranean slopes of the Cangó; up, the relief is hardened and more exposed to land changes, with steps that can link forest, loose rock and open mountain areas. This mixture makes it a logical point to reorganize the march before or when it is high, especially on routes where fatigue and weather conditions more than the distance itself.

It is not appropriate to interpret this proximity as an immediate ascension: in this field the difference between map and real progression can be remarkable, especially when the itinerary changes from the side or crosses stony sections.

In logistics, it is prudent to have basic autonomy. There is a source within 2 km, but the actual availability of water may vary and should not be considered safe without prior verification. As it is a point linked to long routes and to a mountain with strong weather personality, it is appropriate to reach with a margin of light, determined water and a clear idea of the next stretch, whether it continues towards high steps or descends to the valleys of the surroundings of Casteil and Vernet.
