At 1370 meters, it is not yet in the severe environment of the crest, but in a point that already marks the passage from the valley itineraries to a more mountainous terrain. This position helps to read the day well: below, more humanized access; above, the horizon is directed towards summits such as Grand Eulier, Grand Van, Petit Van, Grand Colon or the Pointe Est of Jasse Bralard, all within a relatively close and representative radius of the alpine character of the massif.
Its usefulness is less in absolute altitude than in the relationship between sides and routes. The cabin is integrated into the circuit of the five cabins and in an environment where they connect itineraries to Lacs Robert , Col des Lessines or the forest and lacustre axis between Uriage and Chamrouse. This makes it a practical reference to divide an approach, to propose a long exit with return by another route or to gain height progressively before entering into more stony and exposed terrain. It can also serve as an intermediate point for those seeking to move from the forest to unsolved sectors of collation and ridge from low levels.
From the point of view of orientation, it should be borne in mind that the relief changes quickly in this area. Low access can be evident, but as you gain height the ground opens and the weather of the Chamrousse massif can greatly change the visibility and thermal sensation. The proximity of several summits of more than 2200 and 2400 meters indicates an environment where planning should not only be done by distance, but by accumulated derelict, path state and day conditions.
In logistics, there is no immediate source next to the shelter according to the available data: the recorded eruptions are several kilometres away, with the closest one to about 2.9 km. It is therefore appropriate to propose the exit with sufficient water and reasonable autonomy, especially if the intention is to continue to high levels or to link several itineraries. In a transition area like this, the cabin fits mainly as road support and as a reference of orientation between the access valley and the upper mountain.
