This position places it in a useful transition strip for those who move between forest roads, drawn from half a mountain and routes that above can become more open, stony or exposed to change of orientation.
The context is that of the Aspe Valley, on the French side of the Western Pyrenees, with senderist connections that help to understand its function rather than to make it an isolated destination. Nearby they pass itineraries such as the liaison between Etsaut and the Col d'Arras, the Tour de Busteigts or the Tour Mâture-Arras circuit, as well as wider tours to the Lac d'Arlet and paths linked to the Pic de Labigouer or the Aygue Torte sector. It is not a mountain shelter designed only for a particular summit, but a point that can fit in on traverses, valley changes or days that should be set off in two.
It also helps to read the nearby relief. To the next heights there are references such as the Soum de Lagaube, very close in a straight line, and further summits such as the Pic d'Ayous or the Pic des Moines, which mark an increasingly alpine environment. In this type of terrain, the orientation changes quickly as the slope is won, a chord is crossed or it enters into vagues and more closed areas, which can have a great influence on the progression if the meteum is complicated or if the visibility is low.
This is why its usefulness often depends on the time of the day: it can be used to not extend a late descent, to protect itself before facing a higher stretch the next day or to adjust a journey when tiredness, time or time do not advise to continue. The altitude is not extreme, but is sufficient to notice a mountain environment and a greater exposure to time changes over the bottom of the valley.
In planning, reasonable autonomy is needed. The nearest invented sources are more than 2 kilometres away, so it is not wise to take for granted the immediate availability of water next to the shelter. Before leaving, it is interesting to review mapping, weather forecasting and alternative itinerary, especially if the idea is to link hills or move between different slopes.
