Useful step in the area of Porta del Cel

At 2263 meters, the Cabane de Picou Stele It fits better as an intermediate stop or a guard point on a long day than as a destination in itself. Its position in the sector of Auzat, within the Ariège, places it on an open and exposed mountain terrain, near the route of Porta del Cel and the passage of the HRP two clear references for the one who crosses this part of the Pyrenees with the logic of the journey.

The environment helps to understand its role. To the south and south-east, well-known summits of the border massif are raised, with the Pic de Sotllo less than 4 km in a straight line and Pica d'Estats a little more than 4 km, in addition to the axis of Canalbona. This does not automatically turn the cabin into a base of simple ascension: the proximity on the map does not prevent levels, stony terrain or possible sections of delicate orientation. In this area, the real approach depends a lot on the route chosen and on the weather.

Because of this combination of relief and long-range routes, it can make more sense as step support, withdrawal or phase division than as a fixed camp. It can also serve to shorten a day if conditions worsen in the nearby hills and lomas, something relevant in a sector where wind and time changes often weigh more than pure distance.

The nearest water reference is about 1.66 km, a reasonable distance but sufficient not to resolve the supply without a plan. It is necessary to leave with autonomy, well-worked map and time margin. When a free shelter is used in such an enclave, the most prudent thing is to raise it as basic support within a demanding journey, not as a point with secured logistics.
