Mountain refuge Cabane de Larue

Between Aubisque and the Gourette summits

High, open hills and very close peaks mark the character of this cabin located at 1,976 meters, in the surroundings of Béost, within the edge of the Ossau valley . The closeness of the Pic de Gabizos and the Pic des Taillades places the shelter on a clearly mountainous terrain, more linked to high cords and pastures than to the bottom of the valley. It is a useful location to read the relief between the area of Col d'Aubisque , Gourette and the headers that separate basins and steps of height.

In this Pyrenean sector, the cabin fits mainly in support of crossing routes or to divide days on high ground. Its position makes sense within the passage of trails that link with the GR 10 or with tours back through the valley, like the Tour de la Vallée d'Ossau. It can also serve as a basis for moving to high lakes such as Pouey- Laün or the Pla de Prat, always within an environment where orientation and meteorology make the day very difficult.

Access should be considered as a mountain approach, without taking on a comfortable or continuous terrain at all times. The altitude, exposure to the wind and rapid time changes are normal factors in this strip near the Aubisque, in addition to the possible presence of fog in large diagrams and lomas. The area combines well-known trails with sufficient relief to demand basic experience in reading the ground.

In logistical terms it is necessary to leave with autonomy. Although there are sources in the general area, the closest registered are several kilometres away, so it is not appropriate to have immediate water next to the shelter. For a passing night or a long day towards nearby summits, the most prudent thing is to plan water, coat and time margin before entering this high part of the massif.
