At 1.430 meters, it does not work as an isolated destination as intermediate support for those who need to order a long day, fail a tour or have a safe spot in a mountain transit area. Its position fits well in itineraries that link slopes, hills and pastoral paths above the bottom of the valley.
This step-by-step role is better understood by looking at the identified routes that pass relatively close. In the sector there are tours such as the Tour des Anaques, very close, as well as longer tracks such as Bilboquet-Barecou, Bosdapous, the itinerary to the Col de Laünde or the Chemin de Pirait. It is not appropriate to read the cabin as a basis for concrete summits, because here the relevant is not a punctual ascension but the possibility to channel local routes, reorganize the stage or have an alternative if weather, time or tiredness force to shorten.
It may also be of interest as a point of withdrawal. On a journey through the Aspe Valley, having such a shelter allows not to depend on completing the whole day at once. This is particularly useful in itineraries with changing orientation or with sections where the accumulated gap weighs more than the distance on the map. The reference to Bedous and the valley cores helps to place it in an area with a tradition of cross-cutting, although the practical use of the shelter remains clearly mountainous and not short walk.
Logistics requires caution. There is no immediate source next to the cabin and the invented water points are at a certain distance, with the nearest one more than two and a half kilometres. This makes it advisable to go out with sufficient autonomy and not plan the stage by taking for granted an easy resupply in the vicinity. On hot days or if several nearby routes are linked, this detail conditions much more the actual use of the shelter than the altitude itself.
With the information available, the most sensible thing is to understand Cabane d'Ourdinse as a cross-border support in the Aspe Valley: useful to divide routes, gain room for time changes or have an escape point between local roads. Before incorporating it into a planning it is appropriate to review the access route well, to secure the water from the start and not to base the day on services or references that are not confirmed.
