Mountain refuge Bivouac Marco Crippa

It should be put forward with real autonomy: this vivac is at 3,839 meters and in a very exposed sector of the massif of the Mont Blanc , where time changes fast and logistics gets complicated. On the Courmayeur , on the itinerary of the sensiero per rifugio Monzino, it works mainly as a reference of height in glacier and crests, not as a comfortable stop of valley. The height already places the environment: cold, wind and the progression of a serious mountain.

Between Brouillard and Peuterey

Your interest is in orientation. This point is related to the southern part of the massif, near the scope of the Brouillard and Peuterey group, with references such as the Brouillard glacier, the Picco Luigi Amedeo or Aiguille Blanche de Peuterey . More than an isolated destination, it helps to read the relief in an area where cords, handcuffs and glaciers completely condition the navigation. The proximity of the Monte Bianco , just over a mile in a straight line, makes it clear that this is a very alpine environment, with strong levels and demanding orientation even with a map.

In the key of the journey, it fits better as an intermediate or support point on long routes that link shelters and steps of the Italian sector of the massif. By proximity of network of itineraries, it can be related to the Tour du Mont Blanc and Alta Via n. 2 della Valle d'Aosta but this closeness should not be interpreted as simple or direct access. Here the continuity of the mountain terrain matters more than the existence of a known name on the map.

It can also serve as a reference for those who move between the Monzino environment and other vivacs in the sector, such as the link to Bivacco Rainetto. In this sense, its role is clear: to divide long days, to offer a recognizable point of height and to order the progression on a complex slope of the Italian side of Mont Blanc.

The water should not be assumed. The registered sources are well below, several kilometres away, so it is appropriate to leave with sufficient supply and not to depend on finding it near the vivac. On such a point, in addition, the presence of snow or ice does not amount to practical availability. Planning must be self-sufficient and have scope for adverse weather.
