In the surroundings are highlights such as Grand Darray, Grand Lui or the Bavon Tour, which help to understand the character of the terrain: fast-growing slopes, orientation changes that can greatly change the thermal sensation and a meteorology capable of hardening a day without having to go into very high heights. Although the coat is 1390 meters away, its interest depends not only on the altitude, but on its position in an area of passage between valley and mountain.
At the end of Orsières, within the Valais and near the Liddes and Entremont area, this small point of protection can serve both to fail a journey and to support one-day trips with early departure. The closeness of the Via Francigena and local trails linking Erra d'en Haut, Le Clou or Liddes places it in a useful network for those who need to combine itineraries, correct stages or seek an intermediate reference. It is also within the radius of more defined routes such as the Tour du Lac des Toulles, which reinforces its role as a step coat rather than as a destination in itself.
It is appropriate to plan with autonomy. There are no immediate sources next to the shelter and the nearest ones are more than 3 kilometres away, so the water should not be taken for granted in the access or in the vicinity. In an area like this, the practical orientation matters: a comfortable stretch in the background of the valley does not imply simple continuity when the itinerary revolves, enters the forest or is exposed to open slopes. If used as a basis for exploring the sector, it is important to review the weather and to carry out time changes, especially on routes that seek collates, higher heights or long links between valleys.
