Its position, at 1198 meters, places it in a half-mountain level where practical planning weighs more than epic: it is necessary to reach with margin, because there is not enough data to have equipment, squares or direct supply. For water, the nearest reference is about 1.35 km, with another source at 1.57 km, so it is not reasonable to assume immediate availability next to the coat.
Abri du champ de la Bataille is located in the environment of the chemin des illuminés, within the massif of the Vercors and in the term of Corrençon-en-Vercors, an area where the crosses and links between the sides are very heavy. This way, long-distance routes such as the Traversée du Vercors Nord-Sud for GR 91 , Tour du Vercors à pied and the Tour des 4 Montagnes, so that it can be useful to fail stages or as support on routes linking several sectors of the massif.
The immediate environment helps to understand its role. There are reliefs like Tête des Chaudières and, somewhat more deeply, summits of the Moucherolles and Deux Sœurs sector. This points to a transition ground between forests, hillsides and more open areas of the Vercors, where the orientation between cords and basins can condition the march according to weather. More than a direct ascent shelter, it seems a logistical support in a network of itineraries that connect different aspects of the massif.
To plan a stage here, the wise thing is to leave with basic autonomy of water and food, and to check before the exit the actual state of the coat and the nearby sources. In such a cross-border area, small diversions to search for water or time changes can change the day quite a lot, even without entering high mountain terrain.
