Mountain refuge Abri de l'Essenbach

Before raising the night or a long stop at the Abri de l'Essenbach basic autonomy is necessary. The sources recorded in the environment do not appear attached to the coat, but more than 2 km away, so the water should not be taken for granted on arrival. This limitation is quite a condition for its use and places it more as well-planned road support than as a point of improvisation.

It is located in the sector of Storckensohn, in the Upper Rhine, within the Vosgos massif, at 955 meters altitude. It is not an extreme point, but it is enough to enter a forest and half-mountain terrain where meteorology can change quickly and where the direction of the itinerary matters, especially if loins and heads of the area are linked. In this context, the coat fits better on hiking days with a certain continuity than on very short walks from the bottom of the valley.

For those who travel long routes, their interest is to serve as a guard within a rather active network of traverses. The passage of GR 5 by the Vosges and the closeness of the Tour de Ventron help to understand their role: not so much as an isolated destination, but as an intermediate point in an area where crest, hills and long-distance paths are chained. It can also make sense to support moving to nearby reliefs such as the Tête des Perches , Tête du Rouge Gazon or Haute Bers , all in a relatively close radius and with levels above 1,100 and 1,200 metres.
