Between GR 59 and the Servance Mountains

The Refuge de la Caleuche It fits better as a half-mountain free shelter in an area of passage than as an isolated destination in itself. Its position, in the surroundings of Ternuay-Melay-et-Saint-Hilaire and near the reliefs that link to Servance and Fresse, places it in a wooded and undulating terrain where meteorology can change quickly and the visibility can be easily lost between tracks, lomas and crosses of trails. At 745 meters, it works mainly as a useful reference when the day is extended or the route should be reorganized.

In this sector, routes known as the GR 59 in its section Ballon d'Alsace-Saulnot, and the GR 533 , which makes sense to the shelter to divide long journeys or resolve a retreat without having to go down immediately to an inhabited core. It can also serve as a support point for circular tours of the area, even more in a relief where modest but close peaks, such as Mont Gillet, Mont Masson or Le Ballon, help to build a mental map of the environment and to focus on cords and side changes.

It does not stand out for alpine environment, but for its practical use in the transition mountain: long days, wet terrain, fog, persistent rain or the need to shorten stage. In these conditions, having this shelter located may be more relevant than seeking a concrete ascension. Reliable mapping should be carried and navigation should not be trusted only to the intuition of the ground, especially if several signposted paths are linked.

The water should not be taken for granted in the vicinity: the registered sources are more than 3 km away, so it is reasonable to leave with sufficient autonomy. Since there is no detailed information on equipment or interior state, it is most prudent to put it as a support coat within a well-prepared day, not as a point to reach without logistical margin.
