Mountain refuge Maison forestière de Fountguéré

In the eastern sector of the Cannigó , Maison forestère de Fountguéré fits well as support on several-day itineraries. Its position is particularly useful for those who move around the GR 10 , HRP or the return of the Tour del Canigó where a free shelter can serve to break day or gain height before linking more exposed hills and slopes. It is not at an extreme level, but its 1550 meters already place the march in a medium and high mountain environment where time can change quickly.

The terrain of this area combines forest, lomas and relief more and more open as you seek height towards nearby references like Serrat de la Mente or Pic de l'Orry . This gives him a practical role as a base of approach or as a step point before continuing to higher levels of the Conflent. More than a summit shelter, it works as a logistical support in a transition strip between the forest mountain and the long pirenaic routes, near Aytua and the Escaro area, within the French Eastern Pyrenees.

The planning here must be done with autonomy. Invented sources do not appear next to the shelter: the nearest one is about 3.5 km, a distance sufficient to not have immediate water on arrival. On a journey or in a backpack exit it is appropriate to keep reserve and confirm the actual state of the water points according to time and conditions. It is also important to anticipate cold, wind and humidity, even without high altitude, because weather exposure in this sector can greatly harden a stage when cords are linked or forest protection is abandoned.
