Planning and autonomy in El Salvador

The approach to the Villa ONF of Val Froide moves in an intermediate mountain level, at 1,560 meters, within the term of Saint-Jean-d'Arves, in Savoy. This altitude does not place it in a glacial environment, but it does place it in a field where weather can change quickly and where it is appropriate to raise the day with margin, especially if it is used as support for higher routes in the Arves sector.

Their interest fits mainly into a logic of passage and route organization. In this area it links with the Tour des Aiguilles d'Arves , present in several stages, and also with other paths of more continuity such as the Chemin d'Assise or the pedestre network of the Oisans. Rather than understand it as an isolated destination, it makes sense to read it as a useful point for fractionating tours, reorganizing a journey or preparing a day to higher levels.

The immediate environment gains Alpine character by looking to nearby summits such as the Aiguille Centrale d'Arves and Aiguille Méridionale d'Arves , both above 3,500 meters, in addition to nearby reliefs such as Crey Aigu or Montzard. This proximity of large levels around helps to place the shelter in a transition sector between valley and high mountain, where the land can be quickly hardened by leaving the low levels.

In practical planning, the most important data is water. The registered sources are far away, with the closest one to more than 7 km, so it is not appropriate to have supply close to the shelter. For a journey or a night in autonomy, it is reasonable to get there with enough water or to have resolved that point before.

It also interests a conservative approach: if the day depends on finding water near, a very short stage or an easy resolution of contingencies, this shelter should not be the only logistical asset. It fits better in well-prepared exits, with a margin of autonomy and a clear reading of the itinerary to be linked.
