It is in the surroundings of Grignon, within the area of Albertville, on the Saboyan side that links half-wooded heights with higher reliefs of the Beaufortain. It does not appear as a high-altitude shelter, but its 1102 meters do place it in a strip where meteorology can change quickly, especially with rain, fog or cold outside the summer.
From this point, the shelter is below nearby summits like The Great Lanche , Croix de la Lanche or La Dent du Corbeau all of them sufficient to mark a clearly mountainous character on the itineraries of the area. This makes it a tactical support rather than a high alpine base: it can serve to divide a day, cut a withdrawal or rethink the route if the schedule is extended or conditions get worse in the upper parts. It also fits in the context of Tour du Beaufortain and its variant, although it is appropriate not to take for granted an immediate step through the route without first reviewing the specific itinerary.
The presence of sources from about 2 km suggests no water with the shelter without prior check. In a prudent planning, it is important to reach with sufficient autonomy and to assess the state of time before gaining height to more exposed cords or slopes. By its position, the Villa de Gulia is more useful when it is interpreted as a point of support, waiting or reasonable withdrawal than as an isolated destination in itself.
