Mountain refuge Casa Alpina Belvedere

Between step and base

Casa Alpina Belvedere in the Alp Grüm sector and over the valley of Poschiavo , works more as a point of articulation of routes than as a simple end of the day. In this part of Grisons , at 2198 meters, the orientation changes much as you look at the depression of Poschiavo or the slopes and summits of the Bernina massif. This difference conditions progression: it is not the same to follow a linear journey as to deviate to gain height or link to more alpine terrain.

Field reading

The immediate environment is well related to itineraries such as Alp Grüm-Cavaglia or with a long route like the Via Valtellina , so the shelter can be used to start extensive stages or to break them without losing continuity in the journey. From here, the valley offers a clear reference of descent, while up the relief becomes more complex and forces to read collates, lomas and exposure changes with more attention, especially if weather reduces visibility.

Its position also helps to understand the relationship between shelter and nearby summits. Piz Campasc , quite close, marks an accessible relief within the immediate environment, while names like Piz Cambrea or Pizzo Palù place the whole in a more serious high mountain context, with glacial environment and land where a simple proximity on map does not amount to direct access. It is therefore appropriate to assess well whether it compensates to leave the main route to seek an ascension or a side link.

In logistics, there are sources within a mile, a reasonable but not immediate distance on mountain terrain. If you are late, with residual snow or with unstable foresight, it is more prudent to have water and equipment autonomy. The height and the opening of the ground to the change of the side make wind, cold and cloud play an important role even on routes that on the map seem short.
