Mountain refuge Calandahütte SAC

On a journey on the side of the Calanda , this shelter works above all as a clear reference to order the navigation and share the effort before entering the higher ground. At 2073 meters, Calandahütte SAC is above the forest and already in a strip where the relief begins to condition both the orientation and the weather. Its position naturally links it to the environment of Coira in the Grisons but the atmosphere is already fully mountainous and closer to an alpine crossing than to a simple valley walk.

The immediate massif helps to understand its usefulness. Very close are raised tops like Felsberger Calanda , Haldensteiner Calanda or Tüfels Chilchli , which places the shelter on a hillside and a cordal where it is appropriate to read map and land well, especially if they are linked to hills or seek continuity to other aspects. It does not appear as an isolated point without context, but not as a shelter in a massive passage area: its role is rather that of intermediate support on mountain itineraries with a certain link logic.

In the area there are local hiking tours and also a longer route such as Senda Sursilvana which provides a regional context, even if it does not automatically turn this shelter into a direct stop to that route. It is more useful to understand it as a reorganisation base on the map for itineraries that climb from the Chur environment, cross the mountain or seek approaches to the nearby summits without solving the whole day from low levels.

Water management deserves attention. There is a registered source about 1.18 km, a reasonable mountain distance but sufficient not to take for granted the immediate supply next to the building. If a night or a long day is proposed, it is appropriate to leave with autonomy and to consider that in such places the actual availability may vary according to time and conditions.

It is also prudent to have rapid changes in time, irregular visibility and terrain that can be made more demanding than the ascending or descending map suggests. In a shelter free of this altitude, planning weighs more than improvisation: clear itinerary, water planned and margin to correct whether the progression to Calanda or the return to Coira is complicated.
