Mountain refuge Cabane des Férices

On the western side of Belledonne, Cabane des Ferices is located at 1,920 meters above Arvillard, in a mountain sector that links the reliefs of Savoy with the routes of crest and passage of the massif. Its position fits well in a transition ground between high forest, pastures and more mineral slopes, where the orientation and continuity of the journey weigh more than the proximity to inhabited cores.

In this part of Belledonne, the shelter is especially interested in supporting long displacements or as an intermediate point to break days. The presence of several stages of the Haute Traversée de Belledonne for GR 738 helps to understand its role: not so much as an isolated destination, but as a useful part within a progression by the massif. It also remains in an area from which ascension and links are planned to nearby summits such as Pic du Frêne o Les Grands Moulins, which reinforce the mountainous character of the environment and the need to move with high-middle mountain criteria.

Access and movements around the cabin require a good reading of the ground. Although no times or levels are provided, the altitude, the context of crossing and the proximity of peaks above the 2,400 and 2,800 meters indicate an area where meteorology can change quickly and where an orderly withdrawal is as good as a continuation of route. In this sense, it also works as a reference of withdrawal or pause before going down to side valleys or retaking a main itinerary.

A practical data stands out above the rest: the Source des Férices It appears almost next to the shelter, a few meters away, something relevant in an area where the water conditions the autonomy. However, in the mountain it is always appropriate to verify its actual flow rate according to time and conditions. If it is proposed as support for demanding hiking or crossing, it is reasonable to arrive with a margin of orientation, weather forecast and sufficient equipment for an exposed and unimmediate environment.
