Mountain refuge Cabane de la Combe de Juan

Between thumbnails and rounded summits over Villars-Colmars

The approach to Cabane de la Combe de Juan is already located on open mountain land, at 2010 meters, in the heights of Villars-Colmars , within the Alpes de Alta Provence. Its position fits more with a walking or support coat on a long day than with a point linked to the valley bottom. The near relief helps to focus: to the immediate environment there are references such as the Denjuan's Sommet and Montagne de Vachière , while something further away close the horizon summits like Le Mourre de Simance or Sangraure . This set draws a sector of high, divisive and time-exposed slopes, where the altitude is soon noticed.

Because of its location, this mountain shelter works well as a basis for linking nearby ascension or for failing tours in the area. It may also make sense as a point of withdrawal if the GR 52A , the Sentier panoramique du Mercantour, as it is in a field compatible with travel routes and not just with back and forth exits. Rather than serving a single concrete top, the cabane fits into a logic of movement between cords and hills, with several options of continuation according to the meteorology, the chosen orientation and the level of commitment of the day.

It is appropriate to plan with autonomy. The registered sources are several kilometres away, so it is not wise to have immediate water next to the shelter. At this point, in addition, wind, fog or a quick change of time can complicate navigation even in reliefs that on the map seem simple. Before leaving, it is interesting to review cartography, down alternatives to the Colmars sector and the actual state of the expected itinerary.
