HRP and Gistain Valley

In the environment where the 18 and 19 stages of the HRP , Cabane de Formigons it fits better as a walking coat than as a shelter associated with a comfortable core or a service area. At 1,790 meters, in the municipality of Gistaín and within the Sobrarbe, it appears in a strip where the land already has mountain character and where time can change quickly, even without entering into particularly high levels of the central Pyrenees.

That context marks its use. It is not so much understood as a destination in itself, but as support for long days, links between itineraries and prudent planning in a sector frequented by walking trails. In addition to the HRP, the area passes through routes marked as the PR-HU 115 towards the Irones of the Sen and drawn from GR 19 , which strengthens its role within a network of itineraries where it is necessary to measure well time, weather and autonomy.

Water and autonomy

The most practical data here is water. The nearest registered sources are more than 4 kilometres away, so it is not appropriate to have immediate supply next to the shelter. In an exit through this area of the Gistain Valley, this requires sufficient load to be provided from the beginning or to be very clear where it will be filled during the day.

The landscape of this sector of the Aragonese Pyrenees combines the feeling of a high valley with slopes and rails that close the horizon as land is gained. There are no data to allow it to be presented as a basis for concrete ascension, but it is a useful point in a mountain transit terrain, more aimed at linking routes than to a long stay.

It also helps to place it in the general context of Gistaín and the pirenaic header that looks to large massiums of the area, with references close to the valley as Viados and, on a broader scale, leading summits in the Bachimala sector. Even so, to use this mountain shelter with criteria, the most reasonable thing is to focus on the verifiable: medium-high altitude, long-distance passage and clear need for prudent planning.
