The network of small trails that runs these hillsides allows to design traverses that link with the Hayedo de Las Ilces or the surroundings of the Arroyo de Orpiñas, facilitating a logical progression by the broken relief and the valleys of glacier origin that define this sector of the massif.
Located at 1538 meters of altitude, the building is located in an environment marked by the proximity of the provincial divide and the direct influence of the Peña Prieta massif. The surrounding landscape is dominated by large high pastures and circuses that shape the head of the Vega de Liébana. This position makes it possible to observe clearly the transition between the forest masses of the lower levels and the purely mineral terrain of the summits, offering a privileged perspective of the relief modeling in this area of contact between mountain systems.
As a support point in the planning of long days, the shelter provides the necessary logistics for the promotion of important summits such as Los Altares. The connection with the cordal that is projected from the peak Three Provinces makes this Vega a node of communications for mountaineers who seek to link different sectors without descending to the valleys. The proximity of natural steps reinforces its usefulness as an intermediate base on long-range routes that cross the central axis of the mountain range, allowing a more balanced effort management during the journey.
Given its status as a free shelter, it is essential that the user maintain total autonomy, especially with regard to water supply, as the catchment points are located at a distance that requires foresight. Weather exposure in this high mountain environment requires rigorous planning and constant monitoring of land conditions. In the absence of permanent or protective services, self-sufficiency in equipment, shelter and food is the determining factor for ensuring a safe stay in this isolated enclave of the Cantabrian geography.
