Mountain refuge Berghotel Obersteinberg

Between slopes and large walls of the Bernese Oberland

Berghotel Obersteinberg is left in the term of Lauterbrunnen, within a mountain sector where the relief changes much as it is earned or lost height. It is not the same progress by valley and forest tracks as by more open slopes towards Schwendriwald, Wasserbrücke or the Rütti environment: orientation, time exposure and day wear can vary quickly even if the shelter is not at an extreme level. At 1,780 metres, it operates mainly in support of a transition area between the southern bernese Oberland and increasingly alpine land.

Access is better understood from the network of roads linking Stechelberg, Rütti, Schwendriwald and Wasserbrücke. This continuity allows it to be used to start the day or to adjust the journey if the weather gets worse, if the time is longer or if tiredness forces to reduce targets. In this environment it is appropriate to read the chosen route well, because the changes in orientation influence the pace of running and the thermal sensation, especially when alternating protected sections with more exposed ones. The information available on equipment and services is not comprehensive, so it is sensible to raise the output with autonomy and without relying on unconfirmed benefits.

It can also make sense as a reference for those who move between the Lauterbrunnen valley and the mountains that close the horizon to Mürren and the Bernese massif. Entity summits such as the Grosshorn , Breithorn , Gspaltenhorn or Schilthorn which help to understand the Alpine character of the sector, although its ascension already belongs to a land and planning other than that of a simple access to the shelter.

In the basic logistics, there is a source at about 770 meters, useful data but it is not appropriate to interpret as absolute guarantee without checking conditions on the ground. In long or uncertain days, this point fits better as a functional guard within a mountain route than as an isolated destination in itself.
