Mountain refuge Refugio Julio Casal - Tajahierro

The environment of Brañavieja marks the transition to the water divisions of the Shampoo Brotherhood of Suso. In this sector of the Cantabria Range, mountain traffic is conditioned by exposure to the winds and the rapid formation of fog in the glacier circus. The progression to the higher levels requires a constant reading of the relief, especially when the visibility is reduced in the vicinity of the Sierra del Cordel.

At an altitude of 1591 meters, the Refugio Julio Casal - Tajairón is located as a support point in a frequently unstable weather area. Given its location on an open collar, its main utility is to protect against sudden changes of time rather than as a destination with guaranteed services. A conservative approach is essential: it should not be seen as a safe point of revival, since the management of the effort must provide for the total autonomy of the mountain.

Water availability is a critical factor in this aspect. The Chivo Fountain is located almost four kilometres away, which forces to plan the water charge before leaving the lower cores. In winter or low visibility conditions, the orientation between the cords may be complex due to the homogeneity of certain sections of the slope, which requires experience in the use of mapping tools to avoid deviations to secondary valleys.

From this position, the relief is raised to significant summits such as the Pico of the Three Seas , Pico Cornon or Peña Iján . These elevations, which exceed 2000 meters, define the alpine character of the area and act as natural climate barriers. Access to these tops from the shelter allows direct ascendations to be managed, provided that it is taken into account that the ground can become technically demanding according to the time of the year and the state of the level mantle.

The enclave is integrated into the network of long-distance trails, highlighting the passage of GR 1 o Historic Path of Cantabria. It also facilitates the connection with local routes such as the Senda a Hoyo Sacro or the approach to the Senda de Fuente Cobre.
