This logistical limitation marks the character of the Mataurría Refuge , a structure that rises to 1425 meters of altitude in a transition area between the dehesas of the centenary oaks Bottom Towers and the highest cords of the Sierra de la Demanda Burgalese.
Its location is key to those who travel the GR 82 in its stages between Huerta de Abajo and Huerta de Abajo, functioning as a point of reference in this long journey. The environment is defined by a relief of half mountain where the rebollo and acebo forests give way to high pastures, offering an environment of isolation that requires experience in the management of long-lasting routes on serrano terrain.
From this position, access to summits such as the Pico Ahedillo or Cerro de la Serratilla is direct, both being less than two kilometres away. These elevations, along with the proximity to the Alto de la Campña , allow the shelter to be used as a basis for exploring the cords that divide the surrounding valleys, facilitating the link between the lower forest tracks and the most exposed crest areas.
The demand of the land is manifested in the continuity of trails such as the PR-BU 203 , linked to Neila lakes or Route Two Water . The orientation in these areas may become complex in the face of sudden weather changes, making the installation a tactical resource to divide long days or to ensure a point of protection if fatigue or time compromise progress towards nearby population nuclei such as Upstairs .
Given the distance over two kilometres to the nearest sources, the stay or passage through this point requires responsible management of resources. The utility of the shelter is focused on its role as a support for the roads of resistance and traverses that connect the different valleys of the region, always under the premise of total self-sufficiency by the mountaineer that passes through these latitudes of the province of Burgos.
