Refuge de l'étang Fourcat It fits better as a link-free shelter than as a simple end of climb. At 2445 metres, at the end of Auzat and very close to the border axis with Andorra, it is located in a high mountain strip where the day is usually decided on the hill or the side that is wanted to cross. This character of passage is noted in its relationship with long-distance routes such as the HRP and the journey Porta del Cel they use this sector to connect basins and valley changes.

Day orientation

The environment responds to a geography of lakes, cords and high steps, closer to the open and mineral terrain than to the comfortable valley. The reference of the étang Fourcat helps to place it in an area where the cross-tiered orientation matters as much as the accumulated gap. From here, planning depends not only on the shelter, but on which side it continues: to the side of Auzat or to the Andorran area of Ordino-Arcalis and Tristaina, both linked to a very marked glacial relief. In this context, close figures such as the Pic de la Font Blanca or Pic de Creussans they strengthen the Alpine character of the sector, although the main use of the shelter remains that of support in the journey or partition of stages.

Altitude and isolation advise to raise the exit with margin when changing time, fog or wind in the high steps. No really close water points appear in the available data, so it is appropriate not to have immediate supply next to the shelter and to have sufficient autonomy for the day. In such an exposed area, this type of shelter functions primarily as a practical resource for ordering a journey, shortening a long stage or facing the crossing between valleys with an intermediate point in height.
