The Refuge d'Afangi appears in the environment of Afangi, next to the axis of Kjalvegur , inside Iceland. At 470 meters of altitude, it does not respond to an image of high alpine mountain, but it does respond to an open, exposed terrain with few obvious supports around. In this type of landscape, orientation and meteorology weigh more than height: the sense of isolation can be remarkable and a change of time quickly complicates any displacement.
More than as a destination in itself, it fits as a shelter free of basic support for those who move through this inner strip and needs a fixed reference on the map. The information available on specific access, linked routes or nearby summits is limited, so it should be raised as a safe place within a well-prepared day, not as a base of defined itineraries if no mapping, reliable track and field reading are available.
The logistics here is decisive. There are no nearby sources, so it is not appropriate to have water in the vicinity and it is prudent to leave with sufficient supply or a clear strategy to achieve it before reaching the shelter. There is also no precise data on immediate senderist connections, so any journey must be considered with margin, especially if it is dependent on limited references in a large and unstructured area.
In such an enclave, the main value of the shelter is to offer a recognizable point in the middle of a territory where exposure to the wind, rain or fog can make the day very much conditioned. Those who use it should provide for real autonomy, review the weather forecast and not take for granted any additional water or support outside of what is on it.
