Mountain refuge Cabane de Puchèoux

It is appropriate not to have immediate water next to the coat. The nearest source is about 1.6 km, a relevant data for planning the approach and the load from the beginning, especially if the day continues on mountain grounds. Cabane de Puchèoux in the end of Laruns, it is located 1,750 metres on the French side of the Ossau Valley, in a sector where the shelter works more as logistical support than as a place to reach without foresight.

Its position fits well in the surroundings of the Portalet and the large mountain axis dominated by the Pic du Midi d'Ossau , very close in general line and clearly decisive in the character of the landscape. There are also reliefs such as the Pic du Pourtalet or Le Lurien, so the shelter is linked to a ground of hills, open slopes and steps of connection between valleys, rather than to a comfortable or guarded valley background.

In terms of itinerary, this mountain shelter in the Ossau massif can serve to channel entity tours. In the area they pass the Voie d'Ossau (GR 108), the Tour du Pic du Midi d'Ossau and stages of the HRP as well as trails linked to the lakes of Ayous and the Col of Larry. This coincidence of traces makes it a useful point to divide days, link traverses or adjust a long route according to weather, tiredness or land conditions.

The effort management here matters as much as the overall direction of the journey. The altitude is not extreme, but the context is fully pirenaic and exposed to rapid time changes. If it is to be used as a support, it is necessary to reach with margin, sufficient autonomy and the water decided in advance, without making immediate resources or unconfirmed services.
