The landscape here is open and mineral, with wide views towards cords that connect with classic routes of the central Pyrenees. The closeness of the Pic de Qüenca , almost less than a kilometer in a straight line, reinforces the feeling of being on a ground conducive to alpine exploration.
Access requires good physical form and experience in mountain terrain. The approaches from the valley involve sustained levels and sections where the path can be diffused between blocks and high pastures. This shelter is integrated into the passage of the HRP in several of its stages (24, 25 and 26), which makes it a common point for long-range voyages. It also links with variants of GR 211 , providing demanding circular routes.
As a base camp, it allows direct ascension to summits such as the Tic de Marimanha or Pic de Moredo , both accessible in full days from the shelter. The elevated position reduces the times of attack on these tops and promotes the channelling of several ascension in the journey. The terrain is varied: from herbous slopes to more technical peaks according to the chosen itinerary.
In logistical terms, the water supply should be planned in advance. Although there are sources within a radius of several kilometres, they are not immediate to the shelter, so it is recommended to arrive with sufficient reserves. Exposure to the wind is common due to the altitude and opening of the ground, especially in time changes. This is a relatively isolated enclave, with moderate transit linked to HRP, which brings a wilder and quieter experience than in other more crowded areas of the Pyrenees.
