Between cross and high ground

In this part of the Valais, several itineraries back and journey of entity go through a demanding relief, with a clearly alpine environment. At 2710 meters, the shelter is very close to summits and crests like the Haut de Cry and relatively close to Grand Muveran and Petit Muveran . This environment helps to understand its character: high, open and exposed terrain, where time can change fast and where altitude is seen in progression. It is not appropriate to have a comfortable access or a uniform approach. According to the chosen itinerary, the accumulated gap, the continuity of the path and the type of floor can make the day much more serious than a general map suggests.

It can also make sense within long-breath tours such as the Tour des Muverans, the Tour du Grand Chavalard or the historical route of the Via Alpina in this sector. In this context, it functions as a mountain shelter to reorganize stages, not as a point with guaranteed logistics. If the idea is to link hills, attack nearby peaks or cross valleys, it is necessary to reach with time margin and with sufficient autonomy.

The water should not be left for the last moment. There is a cartographed source about 1.5 km away, but that distance, at this altitude and on mountain grounds, does not amount to immediate availability next to the shelter. It is therefore prudent to go out with your own reserve and confirm recent conditions before relying on the bivouac in a tight planning.
