The environment of Chaumeil combines rural isolation and senderist transit. Abri du Puy Lafajole , in Nueva Aquitaine and at 867 meters, it fits better as a support coat within a long day than as a destination in itself. Its position in the Monédières sector places it close to itineraries that link Chaumeil with Treignac or Meymac, and also within the senderist axis that goes down from Aubusson to Brive- la-Gaillarde. This condition of passage is useful for sharing the effort in variable routes, especially in an area where the relief is not alpine but is undulating enough to accumulate a level and wear over the hours.

Land and autonomy

The most clear reference of the nearby terrain is the Suc au May , less than half a kilometre and slightly above the coat, a point that helps to understand the exposed character of this high part: wind, rapid changes of time and a sense of opening in unstable days. In this context, the shelter may serve to protect itself or to fail a journey, but it is appropriate to plan with margin. No immediate water points appear next to the coat; the registered sources are several kilometres away, so it is reasonable to leave with sufficient autonomy and not to have near resupply. It is also important to provide for basic navigation and a prudent management of the time, because the real utility of the place depends less on its known services than on its location within a network of highways.
